You know your jokes were bad when they inspire Paris Hilton to start defending chastity.
Russell Brand, the Englishman famous mostly for presenting awards, really should have known better than to make fun of the Jonas Brothers’ purity rings at the MTV Video Music Awards. First, their cult following will probably find him in a dark alley and mug him for saying anything mean about their husbands-to-be. Second, purity turned out to be a bit more popular than expected.
The jokes weren’t even that witty. Russell joked that the boys were “ungrateful because they could have sex with any woman they want. That is like Superman deciding not to fly and go everywhere on a bus." He mocked their rings, questioned their commitment, and even hit (literally) below the belt.
American Idol winner Jordin Sparks was mad, and the crowd was right behind her. “I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody—guy or girl—wants to be a slut,” she said, getting cheers from the crowd.
“That’s something cool for a kid to keep, so don’t pick on them for that,” Paris Hilton told Us Weekly.
The Jonas Brothers haven’t really responded except to say they had no hard feeling against Russell, and that he “needs a hug.” Aw, how sweet.
