Five Reasons to Like the Yankees

David Sessions    Apr 06, 2009    2 COMMENTS    SHARE

The new Yankee Stadium opens last weekend

The Yankees play the Chicago Cubs in an exhibition game on Saturday, the second game played in the new Yankee Stadium.

I'm going to step in for a minute to write about a topic I know will get Bigs and Bones stirred up: reasons a Texan could maybe possibly somehow like the New York Yankees a little bit. (Backstory: I'm from Texas and now live in New York; Bigs is also from Texas and a lifelong Rangers loyalist; Bones is from New Jersey and calls the Yankees his team.) Watch! This should be fun.

So without descending into sports-fueled troglodycism, I'll say that, being a Texan (we'll never forget 1996) and a fan of lesser AL East teams, the Yankees have always been Enemy Numero Uno. But, also being charmed by weird things about baseball teams like logos and stadiums, I find myself slowly warming to them after visiting their new home on Saturday.

Here are my five best excuses for starting to maybe be a Yankees fan:

1. They're not the Mets. Even though the Mets have a new stadium, too, going all the way out to Queens is less cool than going to the Bronx, and, given the choice, I always pick the AL. But anyway, as the crazy girl next to me put it when a Yankee swung at a particularly "lame-ass pitch": "Why don't you go play for the Mets!"

2. Rooting for underdogs is overrated. After a whole lifetime of it, it's really tempting to be on a usually-winning side for once. Except when the Rangers are in town, of course.

3. They hit lots of home runs. Or at least they did on Saturday: four to be exact, and that's really what we all go to baseball games for anyway.

4. Those new seats are reallllly comfortable. Even though you're supposed to get numb at baseball games, the plush, cushy lower level at the new Yankee Stadium is impossible to resist.

5. You never have to worry that they'll change anything. With most teams, there's the constant fear of a drastic logo change or an ill-advised move. But being part of the Yankees dynasty, you know that the logo, the uniforms, and the recorded National Anthem (see video) will always be the same. Even when they get a new stadium, they'll just keep rebuilding the same design right on into infinity. Change you can believe in? Also overrated.

P.S. A video from the game this weekend, of the national anthem and the bald eagle flying in over the field:

  1. Words can’t express how proud I am of you David…as for timing, I don’t think you could have picked worse with Bigs coming to NYC this weekend. I’ll watch your back.

I’m still jealous a Texan made it to the new stadium before me….awesome seats/pics too.

  2. David. NO.

Come on man, the only semi-redeeming thing about the Yamdankees was that piece of baseball history known as Yankee Stadium. And now even that is gone.

    I’m disappointed in you.
