Ryan Tedder gives Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce the same track

So we've mentioned ubiquitous pop balladeer Ryan Tedder quite a bit around here: how he writes boring songs for his own band, OneRepublic, and has lately been foisting them on megastars like Beyoncé and Kelly Clarkson.

But the plot thickens: in what Kelly describes as "a shitty situation," it appears that Tedder has sold the very same track to both her and Beyoncéa piano-driven accompaniment with a slamming beat that is identical in Beyoncé's "Halo" and Kelly Clarkson's new single "Already Gone." Clarkson wrote the lyrics to her version using Tedder's music, but didn't hear "Halo" until her album was printed and shipped. Now she's pissed.

"No one's gonna be sittin' at home, thinking 'Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyoncé and Kelly the same track to write to.' " she said. "No, they're just gonna be saying I ripped someone off." She fought to stop "Already Gone" from being released as a singleout of respect for Beyoncébut at this point, it's out of her hands.

No comment from the guilty party himself. Here's the comparison:

  1. I thought that’s how every pop song sounded….Oh, sorry, did I say that out loud?

  2. I wonder if I would have caught this right away if it hadn’t been pointed out to me. Regardless, I think it’s pretty shoddy business practices to sell the same music to two different, and very prominent, musicians. How could he every imagine that working out well in the end? What an idiot.

  3. Well, that’s what you get from a “hitmaker” who can’t even write good songs for his own band. After Kara DioGuardi’s mess of a coronation song and Ryan Tedder’s shameless recycling I’m starting to wonder why people pay these shmoes instead of people with talent to write songs.

  4. The only thing that is the same about these two songs is the beat/tempo and the pattern for where the lyrics fit. Different instruments, different singers, different songs.
